FIFA.com is happy to confirm that portugoal has won McDonald's FIFA World Cup Predictor. On a night full of shocks and surprises, our top predictor held his ground and finished the race a comfortable 154 points ahead of the closest challenger.

In a cheeky and tactical move, portugoal backed draws in all five fixtures and although the gamble only paid dividends on two matches, what a pair of fixtures they were! France scored in extra-time to hold Republic of Ireland to a 1-1 draw in Paris (86 points) and Uruguay managed to hang on until the final whistle to claim a 1-1 draw with Costa Rica (89 points).

Runner-up ilirqorri gained 50 points on the leader in Matchday 17, but that simply wasn’t enough to wrestle the Grand Prize from portugoal’s palms. So where did ilirqorri go wrong? The second-place finisher backed draws in Slovenia and Ukraine to his detriment. Had ilirqorri bet on Greece to beat Ukraine and Slovenia to surprise Russia, he would have squeezed past the No1 to claim a trip for two to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™!

Our last honourable mention of the campaign could not go to a more deserving predictor. In only his second round of McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Predictor, Anibus devoured 489 points, claiming a perfect matchday.

The Grand Prize has been won and the qualification journey comes to a close, marking the end of this installment of McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Predictor. Stay tuned however, as we have something special in the works exclusively for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Until then, thanks to all our predictors for putting in the time and effort and remember, every week there is a signed FIFA World Cup winner’s jersey up for grabs in our FIFA World Leagues Predictor game.
