Marseille climbed to fifth as they defeated Valenciennes 5-1 at the Stade Velodrome. Marseille took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break thanks to goals from Argentinian midfielder Lucho Gonzalez and Brazilian forward Brandao.

Benoit Cheyrou added a third for the hosts in the 53rd minute before Valenciennes cut the deficit back to two with a goal from Carlos Sanchez Moreno.

Marseille pulled clear and gave the final scoreline a convincing look as Mathieu Valbuena added a fourth in the 78th minute and Mamadou Niang completed the scoring in the first minute of injury time.

Marseille are now just six points behind second-placed Montpellier with a game in hand on all the teams around them in the table.

Monaco finally fall
St. Etienne moved away from the bottom three as goals from Blaise Matuidi, Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio and Emmanuel Riviere secured a comfortable win over high-flying Monaco. The home side had gone into the game one place above the relegation zone, but three points against fifth-placed Monaco moved them above Nice.

Toulouse too much for Lyon
Lyon's march up the table came to a halt after they failed to register their fourth successive league win following a goalless draw at Toulouse.

But a point was the best the visitors could hope for after they were completely outplayed at the Stade Municipal.
