With alumni that includes the likes of Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi, the FIFA U-20 and U-17 World Cups’ reputation for unearthing spectacular talent is well deserved.

Consequently, all eyes were on Egypt and Nigeria respectively this year as the world’s best youngsters descended on Africa to battle it out for glory and global recognition. As always, the spectacle was memorable, with scores of erstwhile unknown teenagers announcing their arrival on the world stage with performances that thrilled fans and neutrals alike.

Nor were these emerging talents restricted to the game’s superpowers, with exceptional individuals from nations such as Costa Rica, Hungary, Colombia and surprise U-17 champions Switzerland all helping to upset the traditional order. However, while the young stars who illuminated the U-20 and U-17 showpieces may be too numerous to list, the transition from promising youngster to accomplished senior pro is notoriously fraught with difficulties.
