Fluminense take Brazilian crown

Fluminense were crowned Brazilian champions this evening as a 1-0 win at home to doomed Guarani earned them their first title in 26 years. Runners-up Cruzeiro fought hard to defeat Palmeiras 2-1, but ultimately fell two points shy of first.

Emerson scored the decisive goal in the 61st minute as Fluminense, who knew victory would guarantee them the crown, pipped Cruzeiro and Corinthians to the title.

Cruzeiro finished two points behind in second after they came from behind to defeat Palmeiras 2-1, Wallyson with the winner in the 90th minute after Henrique had cancelled out Rivaldo Barbosa de Souza's opener.

Corinthians had to settle for third, a point further back, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at already-relegated Goias. Felipe Amorim put Goias in front and although Dentinho equalised in the 28th minute the visitors could not find a winner.

Vitoria filled the fourth relegation place as their goalless draw with Atletico Goianiense saw their opponents survive on goals scored.

Gremio finished fourth with a 3-0 win over Botafogo, the goals coming from Andre Lima, Jonas Oliveira and Douglas.

Sao Paulo beat Atletico Mineiro 4-0 with goals from Ilsinho, Lucas Gaucho, Marlos and Renato Silva, while Dede and Bruno Paulo scored in Vasco da Gama's 2-0 success over Ceara.

Elsewhere, Atletico Paranaense were 1-0 winners over Avai with Paulo Baier on target and Santos drew 0-0 with Flamengo.
