Real complete deal for Benfica's Coentrao

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Fabio Coentrao from Benfica on a six-year contract, the La Liga club have confirmed.

Real have not disclosed the fee for the Portugal international but a statement from Benfica earlier today put the transfer fee at €30million.

Coentrao passed his medical with Real today at the Hospital Sanitas La Zarzuela in "perfect condition" before travelling to the Bernabeu, where he signed his contract alongside club president Florentino Perez.

The versatile 23-year-old wing-back started his career at Rio Ave, where he made his top-flight debut at the age of 16, before moving to Benfica in 2007.

He spent loan spells at Nacional, Real Zaragoza and also back at Rio Ave before helping Benfica win the Portuguese league in 2010.

He made his debut for Portugal against Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2009 and has won 15 caps for his country.

The Benfica statement read: "Benfica announces that it has reached an initial agreement with Real Madrid for the permanent transfer of the player Fabio Coentrao for the value of €30million.

"We also announce that the transfer will be formalised once the player completes the medical tests which he will undertake, with the consent of Benfica, and agreement of the contract between the player and Real Madrid."

Coentrao is Real's fifth signing of the summer, following on from Turkey international duo Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop, Espanyol winger Jose Maria Callejon and Frenchman Raphael Varane.
